SHOVEL PASS Backcountry LODGE is located mid-way on the famous Skyline Trail in a beautiful high alpine region within Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. The historical Lodge is one of a select few commercial lodges within the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and one of the oldest.
This unique gem has been run as a successful business by the same outfitter’s family for the last 32 years. In operation since 1920, the lodge underwent a major redevelopment in the early 1990's by the current owners.
It is the most recommended stop for tourists hiking the Skyline trail (Lonely planet, Petit Futé). Guests come from Europe, UK, USA, Italy, Spain and Canada. Jasper town site is accessed by car and train and the nearest international airports are Vancouver, Calgary or Edmonton.
The beautiful main log chalet and most of the guest cabins were constructed between 1992 and 1998.
While historically run as a lodge for guests on horseback trips, the facility is currently operated for guests hiking the famous Skyline Trail and looking for a warm cozy cabin and delicious meals for an overnight stay.
The main chalet is a 600 square feet log building with a 200 square foot covered front deck. It includes a dining room and kitchen with 2 propane ranges & 2 fridges (recently upgraded), a pressurized water system with on-demand hot-water and partial solar power.
Shovel Pass Lodge provides accommodation for up to 18 guests.There are 7 cozy individual cabins available, some with 2 or 3 single log frame beds and two cabins with a queen-double beds.
Each cabin is equipped with wash stand, propane heating and propane lighting. Other building includes one staff cabin, and a storage/tack building with horse corral nearby.
The Shovel Pass Lodge is currently operated from mid July to the end of August, however there is enough demand to open earlier and stay open later in September.
The business also has a staging area with parking lot, horse corrals, and a storage building along highway 93, 14 kilometers south of the Jasper townsite. This parcel is 2500 square meters.
